  1. Big Thicket National Preserve
    Two-hour drive northeast of the Houston area. This large national preserve has a large diversity of ecosystems, nine in total. In the park, you can see pine trees to cypress covered swamps. Additionally, you can see a diversity of animals from birds to even sea otters. The park does offer several accessible trails including the fascinating pitcher plant trail.

  2. Brazos Bend State Park
    Known as an alligator park with easy access to birds and the Texas alligator. Merely twenty minutes from Houston and offers a respite from huge crowds. Also, see last year’s fall list.

  3. Visit Franklin Drive Thru Safari
    A two and half hour drive northwest of Houston offers a drive-through zoo. With exotic animals from giraffes to kangaroos, this is a unique experience. Additionally, many of the animals can be safely petted from your car.

  4. See a Drive-In Movie
    Showboat Drive-In in Hockley is showing a few older films every weekend in the evenings. Enjoy movies like the fifties in the confines of your car.

  5. Have a Picnic at Lake Houston Wilderness Park
    A 30 minutes drive from downtown Houston off US 59. The park offers an accessible trail at Peach Creek Overlook with a nice view of pine trees and meandering rivers.
