My Hotel Review
DoubleTree Hotel Austin is located in downtown Austin and is walking distance from the capitol building. Also, the hotel is only a short drive from amazing restaurants and exciting entertainment venues, such as Stubbs. This is a fun city so you shouldn’t have a hard time finding something to do. One downside for the location was the lack of taxis near the hotel, so you will need to book a taxi in advance. Outside of taxis being at a premium, the hotel has the best location for any downtown hotel and is less congested than areas around the university.
The hotel is quite nice and very clean, however I found the hotel a little small for those in chairs and those in power chairs will have a hard time maneuvering.
My hotel room, a two bedroom suite, was quite nice and very spacious. It was not an accessible room, so I won’t be able to fully rate the accessibility of my particular room. However, I felt my room compared to an accessible room will be almost identical, except the bathrooms are walk in showers and toilets are a little higher in the accessible rooms.
My bed was very comfy and will be the same bed for those that stay in an accessible room. In fact I believe the bed height is nearly identical to accessible beds. Those who use wheelchair part time shouldn’t have much of a problem making it work in regular rooms, even with the bath tub.
For those who are hearing impaired or blind, the hotel has several adapations to make the stay more pleasant:
- Braille elevator
- Closed captioning television
- Digital alarm clock upon request that can vibrate or has strobe lighting
- Strobe alarms
- Visual alarms
Despite the hotel being a little small, the hotel satisfies most of my needs and is a great place to stay regardless of its accessibility rating. You will not be disappointed and I guarantee your experience will be quite pleasant.
