Montrose

The Hay Merchant is a new American bar and restaurant with exceptional food.  The food here has a strong emphasis on Southern and Texas cuisine with huge burgers and classic fares such as chicken fried steak.  If the southern food doesn’t interest they have a nice selection of local and international craft beer.

Experience

My visit came on a Saturday afternoon during the weekend brunch and it was fairly crowded.  The restaurant is quite small with a few tables that can accommodate a chair.  I chose to eat outside since the inside was too cramped.

I ordered the Smoked Pork Breakfast Skillet for my meal and man was this incredibly good.

Smoked Pork Breakfast Skillet with Crispy Potatoes, Green Chiles and Fried Egg on Top.

This felt like eating world-class barbeque for breakfast.  The pork was pulled-pork and very tender with a nice compliment of crispy potatoes.  This also comes with corn tortillas and a ranch sauce.  If you come for brunch this is a great option and this certainly won’t disappoint meat lovers.

Accessibility

Outside Seating.

Overall Accessibility of the restaurant was fairly good for the most part.  The restaurant is quite small and will be problematic during peak lunch or dinner hours.  The bathroom is regular size and will be a problem for some chair users.  Lastly, access to the restaurant was impacted due to the construction of a building next door.  The path was blocked and I had to use a path with a sidewalk that was very slanted.  This wasn’t too of a problem for me, but just be aware of this.  Luckily, it looks like the construction should be done very soon.

Overall, The Hay Merchant had amazing food with minor caveats that should not impact most chair users experience.  With that said this restaurant is definitely a new place to try if you’re in the Montrose area.  You will not be disappointed.
