As you know in Houston summers are quite hot and can be uncomfortable for many people.  Luckily, there are things we can do to beat the heat that doesn’t include the beach.  The list that I created below include activities that are wheelchair accessible and fun for all ages.

Top 5 Things to do this Summer

1.  Houston Museum of Natural Science

T-Rex

The Houston Museum of Natural Science has two museums in the area and are great for any age group that loves science.  I have not been to the museum in Houston, but I have visited the Sugar Land Museum, which had nice exhibits but is quite small.  You can read my review here.  The Houston location from other people’s accounts is quite expansive with dinosaur fossils, space exhibits, and even has their own IMAX theater.  This should be on anyone’s list to visit this summer.

2. Space Center Houston

If you’re a space buff or anyone somewhat interested in the universe then the Space Center will be up your alley.  This is located next to the actual Johnson Space Center.  The museum is quite big with many exhibits from astronaut suits to artifacts from the first US satellite, and so much more.  This is a nice treat and the museum is accessible throughout with all exhibits, attractions, and theaters without any barriers.

3. Downtown Aquarium

Fish and Coral

The downtown aquarium is a nice place to cool off with nice exhibits of various aquatic animals and they have a nice sting-ray area where people can pet actual sting-rays.  Also worth mentioning they have a nice exhibit of endangered white tigers that you shouldn’t miss.  They also have a nice place to eat with excellent views of exotic fish from your dining table.

4. Pick a Hobby

Choosing a hobby can be a fun way to avoid the heat and there are many places that can offer classes from cooking to craft making.  Going to a class could be more preferable since you can learn and meet new people.  Some places that offer classes include Michael’s, Joanne’s, or Sur La Table.  All are good choices, but Sur La Table cooking classes can be quite pricey even for beginner classes.

5. Head to the Mall

Houston area has many malls that you can visit from the Galleria to the Sugar Land First Colony Mall.  The Galleria is the area’s most renowned with many things to do but is quite overwhelming for many.  Depending on your preferences, the local mall might be a better option.  Most malls are accessible and have automatic doors.  Whatever mall you choose, this is an easy way to avoid the heat.
